  207. 1993, December 31, 1993 and January 6, 1994 the MIR space station
  208. will be transmitting special digitized voice messages on its
  209. normal frequency of 145.55 MHz.  The message repeats every tow
  210. minutes.  Sergey says that the developer of this equipment is
  211. DL2MDE.

  246. is used to specify the return path to use for the callbook request.

  249. The second command is CALL. This command is used to specify a list of 
  250. callsigns. Each call sign is seperated by a white space. All other 
  251. lines and info are ignored.

  285. Few of the public do either, whether hams or not.
  286. I believe this is primarily because reading is too painful for them.
  287.  
  288. Judging by the quality of the English most hams write (just examine the
  289. typical packet radio message), the written word has become a lost art.
  290.  
  291. That's probably why so many manufacturers are now offering instructions
  292. on video - too many customers can't read the old-style instruction sheets.

  424.      The Radio officers said that their programs suceeded because:
  425.      1. It is clearly established that the county official is in
  426. charge -- not an outside organization.
  427.      2. They train in and perform some duties other than two-way radio
  428. because that is what is needed by and useful to the local government.
  429.      3. The radio officer is accepted as regular staff and attends
  430. staff meetings, goes to the agency office regularly, and actively
  431. seeks new and expanded ways in which the volunteers can serve the
  432. agency and local government. In other words, the RACES (or by whatever
  433. name) is not a declared disaster-only operation. Unfortunately, that
  434. last interpretation of the RACES is still widely misunderstood and
  435. propagated by those with a different agenda.
  436.      A few reported that their packet bulletin board did not carry the
  437. RACES Bulletins and that the reason was unknown. I suggested they
  438. contact their BBS sysop to work backward through the delivery system
  439. to identify the drop out. The RACES Bulletins are by and for all
  440. communications volunteers in government service --- and not just hams,
  441. either.

  443.      Some disaster management officials with whom I spoke said they
  444. have a fine RACES group but never heard of and saw the RACES
  445. Bulletins. I pointed out that the RACES Bulletins are addressed to the
  446. official and not the messenger (recipient station). If the official
  447. claims to have a fine group but isn't getting the mail because it's
  448. not being forwarded -- well, there seems to be a problem with the
  449. messenger, does it not?

  576. Knowing where the repeater is can be valuble, because a standard 3
  577. second topo data base is available that when given the lat/long of the
  578. repeater and the antenna pattern info can predict the coverage. Note
  579. that coverage can be different depending on the frequency involved - 6m
  580. has very different coverage from 2m even from the same site and power. 
  581. Ditto 2m/220, 220/440, 440/1200.  If the coverage maps were to be 
  582. developed from repeater locations, then a knowledgeble user could
  583. simply plug in a new repeater himself, and not have to wait for a
  584. vendor update.  A method of copying the info from an existing repeater
  585. at the same site would be a good interim method.

  587. I have seen two differnt windows based highway map products.  The one
  588. that I can remember the name of is Del Orme, is CD based, and I think
  589. is available from Egghead.  I don't remember the other name.

  615. Also list the cross band systems and linked systems somehow.  Look up
  616. the ZIA connection in AZ & NM.  8 (I think) systems - what goes in on
  617. one comes out on all.  Ditto the Condor 220 system in CA.  Perhaps
  618. clicking on one would show the coverage of the one, plus a zoom-back
  619. icon when clicked woudl show the coverage of the network (just OR the
  620. coverage zones, then zoom to fit the display).

  626. I don't think there is a standard voice recognition system except the
  627. Windows Sound system, and it's recognition doesn't work very well with
  628. the limited audio bandwidth (300-3khz) from the average handy scratchy.
  629. The idea is nice, but not as valuable as the info block or the GPS
  630. feature.

  653.         Hello there all, I am a student at the University of 
  654. Victoria in Canada and am have my tech. license (WH6PB).  I was 
  655. hoping that someone out there would be able to tell me where I 
  656. can find a list for the 2 meter and 70 cm repeaters in the Victoria 
  657. area.  I am using a relatives account to post this, and I 
  658. can't get this newsgroup at the University, so I would appreciate 
  659. if you could E-mail me some suggestions.

  687. Never-the-less in the context of the "repeater database" that was the subject
  688. of this thread, Scott's call for such information to be published makes perfect
  689. sense. I would hope the database would have uses the ARRL directory does not
  690. try to address.
